Photo restoration

Image restoration is often regarded as a method or process used to recover an original image after it has been degraded. Digital restorations are so complex there is an entire field of study that applies complex algorithms that an ordinary person would not be able to understand. To restore an image, it is assumed that there is at least some sort of idea of the original image. Software employed would normally deal with blurring, noise and any other aspect that might have damaged the quality of the image.

In the past, camera manufacturers made larger film cameras to make up for the low level quality of the details in an image. Image restoration is not just meant for old images that have degraded but the same techniques can be applied to correct images that have been distorted or blurred as a result of motion or by an image being out of focus.

Image restoration algorithms are different from image enhancement processes. This is because image enhancement is only meant to make an image more pleasing whilst, restoration has more to do with the scientific data points that render an image look the way it is supposed to look. Sometimes, depending on the availability of an accurate blur model, it can be hard to arrive at an algorithm to correct a degraded image. Some images might be beyond restoration but to arrive at that point you would need professional eyes. Image restoration is an art an a science.

There is a basic method that can be applied for specific issues like;


Fading comes with use or age or the way a photo has been stored. The most common way to fix fading is with the {levels tool) in Photoshop.

2.Color Casts:

Colorcasts are the yellow tinting that comes with old photos or with poor color balancing tools. There are a couple of things you can do like using the white balance dropper tool.

3.Localized damage

Sometimes old photo are damaged by how they were stored, some get stained and might develop creases where a photo could have been folded at one time. Such photos will need a combination of white balancing and color tools as well as a cloning stamp or healing brush.

Photoshop is a photographer’s ultimate software with tools that can take old and new photographs to new levels of quality. The truth of the matter is there is more to photo restoration than what meets the eye. Knowing how Photoshop works and having knowledge and experience in applying restoration models goes a long way.

To do justice to old photos and images where an original point of reference is absent you need to make a lot of interpretive decisions. This is where the arty part of the process comes from. You need to have the perspective of what something could have looked like if there is no other point of reference and that might require you to extrapolate from what is already visibly clear in the image – and this is where the science and mathematical equations come in.

Before you even subject you one and only image to alteration you need to have the finished picture in your head, sea beyond the imperfections and understand the different approaches you can take. Don’t be fooled by the notion that with the right software, you can click a few buttons and voila, everything will be fixed. It might take time, even with the simplest tools at your disposal. To evade the old age of “murphy’s law”, it is always better to entrust your photos to a professional.
